The word SEO simply means search engine optimization. It is the process of improving your website so that it attracts more visitors from search engines.
The number one reason people go online is to find information. We go on to a search engine like Google and type in a question or phrase. The goal of Google’s algorithm is to find the most relevant content or sources of information for the searches people make.
People rarely look past the second page of search engine results, so it is safe to say that those that do not come up on the first page of a search are non-existent to most people online.
Research by Hubspot reveals that most people will only look at the top ten organic results for their searches. In fact, 60% of all organic clicks go to the organic top 3 results.
If you have a product or service, you want to get it in front of the right people, SEO is about not only getting traffic to your website, but getting targeted traffic, increasing awareness for your brand, product, and service, and even gaining new customers in the process.
There are two types of SEO:
Paid SEO- PPC advertising is where people pay and bid for specific phrases and keywords, to have their adverts come up on Google search results when people search those keywords and phrases.
Organic- this is through means such as using social media, content marketing, and so on.
If you want to do well online, it is important to be in line with the latest SEO best practices. It is either you do that, or risk missing out on business and organisational opportunities, or left behind by competitors with a stronger presence.
It no longer matters what size your company or organisation is, the internet has leveled the playing field. Big players can move fast and nimble like the smaller entities, and small players can play big by scaling and amplifying their efforts online.
